E-Business Management Program at International University of Japan

E-Business, earlier thought of as just buying and selling using the Internet, has become an undeniable reality with applications for all kinds of businesses from banking to human resource optimization, from manufacturing to sales, from medical fields to logistic management, and from transforming education to creating new forms of government administration. The "use of information and its delivery to generate tangible benefits" through Internet, mobile communications, and ubiquitous connectivity is the most appropriate way we at IUJ see E-Business.

Highlights:

* Practical Relevance
After carefully studying current business needs, we have added practical relevance by linking our curriculum with the "IUJ PLATFORMs" which literally tie what we teach in the program with the most advanced technologies from our partner companies. Notable among them is the world's most advanced Mobile technology from Japan's IT giants. Students can freely use the specially designed E-Business Engineering Laboratory (E-Lab) for testing some of the newest technologies while doing research for a "Platform" or for their theses.

We also bring in IT business executives to teach or give seminars to the students and organize field visits to companies and other places. This itself has become a great source for students to discuss face to face with top business executives in Japan and outside Japan plus exchange contact information for future job prospects.

* Enhancing E-Biz with MBA Courses
Students have ample opportunities to pick and choose courses from IUJ's internationally ranked MBA Program. Popular for E-biz students are the Accounting, Finance and Management area courses. Taking MBA courses also gives E-Biz students excellent opportunities to network with their counterparts in the MBA Program who have different backgrounds, and work experience. E-Biz students can also take advantage of courses that the MBA Program offers to improve negotiation and communication skills.

* Institutions Recognizing Our E-Biz Program
While we receive a considerable number of privately supported students, a large number of Japanese corporations and international organizations also sponsor students through scholarships and various sponsorships thus demonstrating the value of our E-Biz Program. Among such institutions sponsoring students include:

- Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship Program (JDS Program)
- Asian Development Bank (ADB)
- NTT Communications, Corporation
- NTT Comware, Corporation
- East Japan Railway Company
- Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.
- Ryosan Company, Limited

How to Get the Most Out of E-Biz Program:

This is a one year program. For students who have to go back to their sponsor companies, E-Biz is a great opportunity to intensively enhance their IT and business skills in a short period of one year; international students who have to go back to their jobs back home also fall into this category.

There are students, both Japanese and international, joining this program with a career change in mind. For them, picking up IT management and MBA type skills in one year is useful to find a challenging new career. For international students who want to work in Japan, it is important to take advantage of IUJ's excellent Japanese language program and learn Japanese in order to increase their job prospects.

Students of the International Relations Program (IRP) enjoy the advantages of small classes and close communications with their faculty and enthusiastic colleagues that make our classrooms "living textbooks." This interaction helps with the very important thesis writing requirement where students develop, communicate and defend their own original thoughts in their area of specialization. Students are encouraged to read extensively, think deeply, discuss their ideas openly, and be highly aware of the practical policy applications of their work.

In the program, students may choose from two concentrations: an MA in International Relations or an MA in International Peace Studies.

For the MA in International Relations, we emphasize the study of comprehensive and interdisciplinary world trends with a special emphasis on the Asia Pacific region, and Japan in particular. The Islamic world also receives considerable attention. The program is constructed to allow students the maximum freedom to pursue their own interests within the limits of the specializations offered by the IUJ faculty.

The MA in International Peace Studies track focuses on how peace and security may be created in conflict areas. It examines methods of conflict resolution and peace building which focus on development strategies that lead to stability. A clear link is made between peace, security and economic development.

Public Management and Policy Analysis Program at International University of Japan

About the PMPP (Public Management and Policy Analysis Program)

The term “governance” is coming to be emphasized more and more in development policy issues. Since good governance is widely considered as one crucial solution to eliminate both inefficiency and inequality within our societies, governments and international institutions pay more attention to policies that ensure good governance - sound processes of decision-making and by which decisions are implemented in public sectors. The Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) has established a new two-year MA program, the Public Management and Policy Analysis Program (PMPP), to meet the needs of good governance required to implement and evaluate policies that effectively solve diverse public problems such as environmental damage, public health, education, national and regional development, welfare reform, and international security. As the GSIR faculty and students create a variety of formal and informal ideas we can have a vital impact on shaping the capacity to deal with such problems.

Main Features of thePMPP

Our program possesses three distinguished features as a leading program in public management and policy analysis.

Comprehensive Program of Public Management and Policy Analysis

The PMPP offers various essential courses related to public management and policy analysis. This course work is designed to meet the increasing demand for the knowledge and skills necessary to implement good governance in the public sector. Together with the course work, the program offers advanced seminars in which all students need to discuss their own policy ideas and to complete a highly qualified master’s thesis under close supervision by our full-time faculty members. Our faculty members have been awarded Ph.D. degrees by highly reputable universities in Canada, the US, and Europe, which is unseen anywhere else in Japan. This constitutes the basis for all faculty members being dedicated researchers as well as teachers with the understanding of international standards of research and education that the GSIR must pursue.

Emphasizing Interdisciplinary Concepts of Social Sciences

The program, like no other graduate school of public management and administration, emphasizes interdisciplinary concepts of social sciences - management, economics, sociology, law, and public administration - with a mix of highly analytical and descriptive methodologies in order to solve various issues in a real world. To do this, the program is coordinated jointly with other academic programs - the International Development Program (IDP), International Relations Program (IRP), and International Peace Studies Program (IPSP) - in the GSIR, each of which has been successful in placing many capable graduates in policy-related posts in governments, international institutions, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and private firms in various developing and developed countries. In addition, the program also equips students with database management, statistical and quantitative analysis, and communication and presentation skills through utilizing software packages, such as STATA, E-Views, SAS, Mathematica, GAUSS, LINDO, Excel, and Power Point.

Multicultural Environment with a Diversifi ed Student Body

The PMPP, like other programs of the GSIR, provides students with a rich education and research environment in IUJ’s multicultural world which has a diversified student body coming from over fifty countries. The overwhelming majority of students and faculty members live in on-campus apartments and dormitories. This facilitates close interaction among students, faculty members, and administrative staff members. This study environment is unique to IUJ. Students enjoy their hours, both in-class and out-of-class, discussing the problems of the world in formal, informal, and extremely relaxed settings and establishing a worldwide network of students, faculty members, and IUJ graduates, an important asset for their future careers. In addition, due to the campus location, our school has close relationships with local societies, such as Minami-Uonuma City and Niigata Prefecture, so that students have many opportunities for practical research with access to actual information on matters related to local and global issues.

International Development Program at International University of Japan

The International Development Program (IDP) was created in 1995 as a pioneering program in Japan in the field of international development. Students may choose from two MA degree specializations: The MA in International Development degree equips students to be leaders able to formulate and implement economic, as well as public policies geared for social and economic development. Issues examined include monetary and fiscal policies, international finance and trade, health care management, environmental management, sustainable development, and more. After understanding the immediate and specific circumstances of these issues, students learn a coherent theoretical framework with which to view the wider scope and implications of the issues in the developing world.

The newly established MA in Economics degree track prepares professionals for work in line with the goals of the International Monetary Fund including macro economics, monetary policy analysis and banking. This degree will prepare professionals to be able to promote financial stability by encouraging monetary cooperation and international trade, which will foster sustainable economic growth, allow higher employment and help reduce poverty around the world.

The dedicated faculty members all boast Ph.D. degrees from reputable universities abroad, which is unprecedented in Japan. Their dedication to research as well as their teaching brings a certain dynamism to the classroom which students eagerly enjoy. Some of the best in the world in the development field, IUJ's professional courses expose students to cutting edge knowledge in development economics. The three pillars of the IDP are a well-tailored economics-centered curriculum, the expertise of the faculty, and the professional experiences brought into the classroom by the students themselves.

IDP students gain skills in database use for economic analysis, and become acquainted with key professional software such as E-Views, TSP, STATA, GAUSS, LINDO, etc. Students also create their own unique areas of specialization through their thesis writing, which brings into play the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom.

Highlights:
* IDP is one of the four partner programs of the IMF Asia-Pacific scholarship programs in Japan. Together with the English language program of IUJ, IDP has been entrusted by the IMF to conduct the refresh training courses for all of the IMF scholars coming to Japan every summer since 2005.

* IDP is the first program accepting JDS scholars in Japan. It has accepted JDS scholars most among all the academic programs of Japanese universities.

* IDP is also a designated program to accept JICA long-term scholars who are government officers from developing countries receiving Japanese ODA.

* IDP has been selected by the Indonesian government to establish linkage Master programs with three Indonesian universities. Under the linkage programs, more than 20 Indonesian government officers will join IDP every year from 2007 to 2012.

* IDP is also a designated program to accept ADB scholars who are financed by the Asian Development Bank

STUDENTS TESTIMONIALS
"During the application process I conducted a lot of research and compared the relevant programs of many top European business schools. Key for my decision to pursue an Intl. Master of Science (MSc) in Business Administration at CATÓLICA-LISBON was the compelling overall program structure and the international recognition this program offered. On the one hand I am able to build up a good foundation in general business administration subjects, on the other hand to deepen my knowledge in marketing, my specific area of interest. In addition, this program gives me the chance to gain more international experience during the exchange term at another leading business school.

Besides this, the university has excellent contacts in top consulting firms, and helps you develop personally and professionally with its Leadership Lab program. For me it was simply the best package, taking into account too that living in Lisbon is a wonderful experience."

Stephan Alexander Dreier, German, International Master of Science (MSc) in Business Administration (Marketing) September 2009

"The CATÓLICA-LISBON and ESCP-EAP double degree was a remarkable experience! During the two years, I opened up new professional perspectives, discovered myself and experienced two of the best European business schools. At ESCP-EAP, where excellence prevails, the challenging environment pushes you to be even better everyday. Moreover, living in Paris is an amazing life experience. At the heart of luxury and style, Paris is a multi-cultural city where different religions, styles and cultures live in perfect harmony. Taking the Double Degree Program was for sure one of the most important academic and personal decisions of my life."

João Freitas, Portuguese, Double Degree CATÓLICA-LISBON and ESCP Europe, September 2007

"I found the Masters extremely demanding in terms of time management and teamwork. Different backgrounds and personal schedules and skills must be balanced for delivering quality and timely output - this is a very valuable expertise for a business environment (i.e. working in a company). Also, the international component makes perfect sense in the globalized world we are living in and will have to work in - besides spending one semester abroad, the increasing number of foreign students in Master of Science (MSc) classes also contributes to that experience, which I found very useful in terms of cross-cultural sharing and multinational networking.

Looking back and summing up all that I have done while in the IMScBA, I can conclude that it was, undoubtedly, a good option for me, as it made me feel more prepared and confident about starting my professional career."

Gonçalo Saraiva, Portuguese, Winner of Primus Inter Pares 2009, International Master of Science (MSc) in Business Administration, September 2007

STUDENT´S TESTIMONIAL
"Joining Católica's Masters in Economics has been a challenging and extraordinary experience. The professors' excellence and their close relationship with students along with the opportunity to attend interesting conferences with the best economists (e.g. Sérgio Rebelo and Joseph Stiglitz) created an amazing academic environment for my development as an economist. In addition, Católica also offered me the opportunity to grow as a person through its exchange program. Looking back, I know I made the best choice."

João Freitas, Double Degree CATÓLICA-LISBON and ESCP Europe, September 2007
