The main responsibility of the M&A expert is to advise companies on mergers (uniting with another company) or acquisitions (buying out another company). Top investment banks will focus on big deals which would rarely be below $100 million and in some cases reach billions.

The employment situation is bad. Pessimistic analysis predict a loss of nearly half a million positions in finance and banking between 2011 and 2012. However, it is amazing how unlikely it is for people to change their long lasting habits and to find creative and alternative ways to look for a job outside both of their comfort zone and possibly comfort geography.

Predictions about the job market in 2012 vary greatly, however, one thing is certain – the job market as we knew it has changed irreversibly. This might be good news for recent MBA graduates or seniors who are looking to set foot in companies through the traditional way – internships. 74% of employers surveyed in a recent US campaign, will hire MBA candidates (up 16% compared to 2011). They also expressed intentions to increase the number of hires among their internship base and another 39% are considering to start a paid internship program as soon as possible. One third of the companies are further looking to increase the entry salary of new hires, while the rest are planning to maintain the same levels as in 2011.

Recruiting experts predict that even in growing markets, such as Asia and the Middle East, any significant increase in personnel will not happen before February 2012.
